Chapter Ten

While Anna sat watching from the car, Declan’s tense body language clearly indicated he and Lindi were discussing something major. The sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach reminded her of what it had felt like during the investigation into her parents’ deaths the first time around. She was older now and hopefully a little wiser too. One thing was for sure — she was absolutely determined to find out what it was they didn’t want her to know. She’d been a rudderless ship in stormy seas for far too long. No more.

She climbed out of Lindi’s 4x4 to join the men. As she slammed the car door behind her, they turned to watch her approach, stalling their conversation.

Undaunted, she pointed at the envelope. “May I?”

Declan looked at the package as if in two minds.

Straightening her back, she decided it was time to show them what she was made of. “I think you’ll find it’s addressed to me. It was in my house, and I’m the person who found it.” She barely managed to restrain herself from snatching the thing from his hand—damn macho men. There was a time and a place for it. Right now, she didn’t have the patience.

In the end, she wasn’t sure if she’d taken it, or whether Declan had handed it over. Either way, she held the padded envelope. Taking a deep breath, she extracted the paperwork as they continued to stare at her in silence.

She blinked at the wad of paper. “It’s a letter from my dad.”

Two things struck her at once. The first, her father’s easily recognisable bold handwriting, matching the writing on the envelope. The second, that he had written it with the Mont Blanc fountain pen he had been so fond of using. She paused to take another deep breath. It had been so long since she’d seen anything in his writing that she hadn’t savoured and re-read over the last few years.

“He really did write this letter for me.” She pressed the letter to her chest. “Excuse me. I need to read this by myself.”

With that, she turned to Declan’s pick-up truck and climbed into the passenger seat before closing the door firmly behind her. Both men stood rooted to the spot as if they couldn’t believe she’d walked away with what they probably considered to be a major new piece of evidence. She didn’t care. It was personal. She had a right to read through it by herself before sharing the letter with them.

My darling Anusha. He’d always used her full name, never just Anna. She swallowed the lump that formed in her throat and clenched her hands firmly around the paper. After her little victory displaying her new-found strength, she wasn’t going to fall to pieces over the first few words.

If you’re reading this, then I’m afraid something has happened from which I cannot come back. Either I’m in prison, or, God forbid, dead.

Prison? Though that would have been preferable to death, she shook her head. There was no way her father would have done anything that would lead to his incarceration.
